Living in Amsterdam as an International: What I Wish I Knew Sooner

Door admin on juli 28, 2025

Moving to Amsterdam as an international is exciting — beautiful canals, world-class culture, friendly people, and a high standard of living. But even in a global city like this, there are challenges you only discover after a few months of living here.

Looking back, here are the things many expats (including our students) wish they’d known earlier — and how learning Dutch makes everything smoother.

1. Dutch People Are Friendly — But Private at First

Don’t be discouraged if your neighbors or colleagues seem reserved in the beginning. Dutch culture values independence and boundaries — but once you break the ice (often through small talk in Dutch), people open up quickly. That simple “Hoe gaat het?” can go a long way.

2. Speaking Dutch Isn’t Required — But It Changes Everything

Yes, you can live in Amsterdam without Dutch. But if you want to:

  • Get better job opportunities
  • Build deeper friendships
  • Talk to your neighbors
  • Navigate healthcare or education confidently

…learning the language transforms your daily life. Even a basic level (A1 or A2) helps enormously.

3. Bureaucracy Is Much Easier When You Understand the Language

From DigiD and Belastingdienst (taxes) to city council paperwork and school enrollment, knowing some Dutch takes the stress out of these processes. Plus, you’ll be able to read your own official letters, instead of always asking others for help.

4. Making Dutch Friends Takes Effort — But It’s Worth It

Joining local sports clubs, volunteering, or taking a course (yes, even a Dutch course!) is a great way to meet people outside the international bubble. Dutch people appreciate when you make the effort to speak their language — even if you make mistakes.

5. You’ll Feel at Home Faster Once You Understand the Culture

Dutch culture is known for being direct, pragmatic, and efficient — but also warm, honest, and full of humor. Our courses integrate not just language, but cultural insights that help you understand the unspoken rules of daily life here.
